About Groningen
The city of Groningen is the capital of the province of Groningen, the northernmost eastern province of the Netherlands. The largest urban center in the area (230000 people), Groningen is a relatively undiscovered and unspoiled part of the Netherlands that has kept most of its authenticity.
Groningen is one of the happiest cities in Europe, and happiest small city in the Netherlands, scoring in the top five European cities for quality of life, education, public domain, health care and air quality. Students comprise an estimated 25% of its total population and makes it the country’s demographically youngest city.
Groningen offers plenty of options for visitors. Besides having several touristic attractions of its own such as the Martini Tower or the Groninger Museum, it is at most 2.5 hours away by train from Amsterdam and most other major Dutch tourist attractions. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO world heritage site, is only about an hour away from the cityPlease see here for (official) touristic information. We especially recommend these cycling tours in and around the city.
